MATCHPOINTING:

ACBLScore prints the game results similar to the right hand column >>
has it represented, first by the NS teams, then by the EW teams.   

Both our club and BDBC use a different format at their respective web
pages, which gives more information.  See the left hand column <<<.  

In this case the game was a 5-table Mitchell movement, one where the
NS teams remain stationary and the EW teams move to the next higher
table each round while the boards move to the next lower table.

In a five-table game there are as many possible outcomes;

0 = a bottom score
1, 2, 3 = average plus/minus
4 = a top.

These numbers are called MATCHPOINTS.

Look at Board #1 in the left column <<<<<.

Which EW team did the best?  Team 2 scored a plus 100 against NS
team 4, setting them two tricks.  EW team 4 scored a top board and
received 4 matchpoints.  Which EW team did the next best?  Team 1
held their opponents to making 3 of a major.  Team 1 gets a
next-to-top, or 3 matchpoints.   Continuing on the same hand EW team
4 held the Randalls to making 4 of a major, earning 2 matchpoints,
while the other two EW teams had doubled the game contract but
failed to set.   Since there are only 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 (10) total matchpoints
available and 9 already earned (4 + 3 + 2), that left EW teams 3 and 5 to
divvy up the one point, thus the "dash" which indicates 1/2 matchpoint.

On the same board, which NS team did the best?  It was a tie between
teams 3 and 4.  These two teams split the matchpoints for first and
second place on the hand (4 + 3)/2 = 3.5 or 3- as represented.  Which
team finished third, in the middle?  It was team 5, the average
Randalls, who earned 2 matchpoints.   Earning 1 matchpoint was team
1 and getting a bottom on this board was team 4.

ACBLScore takes care of the arithmetic for us.   A perfect score in this
game (getting a top board on all 25 boards) would be 4 x 25 = 100 total
matchpoints.   Percentages are figured out by:

HOW CAN I USE THIS INFORMATION?

(or, What's in it for me?)

Well, lots.

Take the raw matchpoint score from the right-column printout, >>>>
go down and circle your 0, -, and 1s.   Take the convention card from
your game with the hand scores and make note of the contracts.  

Was -110 a 2H/2S contract on their part, or 3C/3D?  It makes a
difference.  If they scored -110 on a 2H/2S contract, then why didn't
you bid 3C/3D and go down two for -100?   Or -100 going down 1 if
vulnerable.   If they bid 1S-P-2S-?  Why didn't you double with 10
points, a takeout for partner to re-enter the action?  Let's say they
re-double by opener and partner bids 3C, passed around.   If they
clobber you then they should have been in game.  If you weren't
doubled, you'll have a good score.

Use the game details to determine if it was a meat problem--you ate
chicken instead of steak--or if you had a defensive problem that
allowed them to make 5NT when everyone else bid 3 and make 3/4.

Over the span of 25 boards you can figure out your problem for the
evening by looking at the scorecard.  

Trust me, the problem won't be "You bid too much!"   It will be "I was
chicken.  I let them take control of the 2-level."

Taking control of the 2-level.  It goes 1S-P-2S-P, P-?? and it's back to
you.  DOUBLE!  BID SOMETHING!  GET IN THE GAME!  THEY'RE GOING
TO PICK YOUR POCKET CLEAN!  BID-BID-BID!

The same goes for 1C-P-1H-P, 1NT-P-P-P.  You're HOSED!  They're
going to score 90/120/150 against you when you could have bid 2C and
made 90 or 110 your own way.  DOUBLE-DOUBLE-DOUBLE!!!!!  Don't let
them play 1NT ever!
