                                GUEST SPEAKER between AM/PM sessions
Renowned bridge expert FRANK STEWART--"Finding the queen"

Frank Stewart
drove over from Fayette, Alabama to speak to us after lunch was served.
(see the link to Bridge Food for John's casserole recipe).   Frank was impressed with
the crowd of players and agreed that there was plenty of room for the growth of bridge
in the greater Birmingham area.   Frank's basic suggestion on becoming a better bridge
player is to de-emphasize the reliance on bidding conventions and to concentrate on
developing logic skills.  Bridge is a problem-solving decision-making game.   The four
exercises he described on Finding the Queen showed how to use logic (your brain!)
to eliminate some possibilities and to better the odds on other choices.   A good time
was had by all.

In the afternoon session we had 13 tables.   Winners were
Barbara Dawson and Judie Fair (2.32), followed by Fay Prince and Marilyn Haver (1.90), Boots
Jennings and Ida Pack (1.25), Diane Shepherd and Pat Reeder (1.25), Susy Philhours and Diane Meier (.80), Janet Johnson and Liz Milko (.79), Molly Currie and

(.41), Lorette and Clark Ogle, Jerrie Friar and Judy Hasseld (.23) and Eugene Mann and Jimmy Barron (.23).
Friday afternoon results.

              Knockout Session 1. . . . . . 7:00 P.M.  (continues Sat. 9:30 A.M., 1:30 & 7:00 P.M.)

The evening's games consisted of a 6-table Howell movement pairs game and round 1 of the knockout.   In the knockout we saw the closest finish anyone had
ever seen.   We had two head-to-head matches and a three-way in which two of the teams would move on to the semi-finals.  All three teams in the round robin
had one win and one loss; two of the team were at -7, the third at +14.  The two teams with -7 went into a tie-breaker and by the narrowest of margins (.001), the
Smith team beat the Weatherly team and advanced.   In the pairs game
Len Block and David Larson (1.61) beat the field, followed by Jill Salmon and John Griffith
(1.21) , Sabrina and Michael Lewis (.91), Janet Johnson and Charlotte Estill (.68),  Lynn and Jerry Mosley (.60).   After 48 more boards the team of Eugene Mann III,
Jimmy Barron, Jerrie Friar and Judy Hasseld finished first earning 5.15 masterpoints for the victory.   The second place team of Susy Philhours, Diane Meier,
Molly Currie and Charlotte Knight earned 3.86 masterpoints each!
Friday night pairs results.   Knockout results.
